- EXT. STREET - OUTSIDE COMPUTER STORE - DAY
-
- Clay exits a computer store with another gift: the laptop
- computer Jody lusted for at the convention. He walks to his
- car. Within twenty paces, Agent Ellis crosses his path.
- Agent Cho stands close behind.
-
- ELLIS
- Clay!
-
- CLAY
- Agent Ellis! What a coincidence.
-
- Clay turns and continues on his way. Ellis follows.
-
- ELLIS
- Nice computer! What's the occasion?
-
- CLAY
- Oh, just spoiling myself.
- (beat)
- Any luck tracking Hunter?
-
- ELLIS
- Nothing substantial.
- (blurred together)
- Has-she called you?
-
- Clay turns around but keeps inching away, walking backwards.
-
- CLAY
- (acting surprised)
- Hunter's a woman?
-
- ELLIS
- What makes you think that?
-
- CLAY
- You said: "Has SHE."
-
- ELLIS
- Did I?
- (testing)
- Has she, has he.
- (shrugs)
- Well, has-she?
-
- CLAY
- No.
-
- Clay turns and continues walking, visibly worried.
-
- ELLIS
- Well, contact me if-she does.
-
- ELLIS chuckles. Agent Cho walks up to join him.
-
- (to Cho)
- We've gotta find that girl.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. JODY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
-
- Jody admires her new laptop, fresh out of the wrapper.
-
- JODY
- (troubled)
- How can you afford it?
-
- In the background, Clay pours himself a drink--still visibly
- shaken.
-
- CLAY
- (impatient)
- I want you to have the best.
-
- JODY
- Sure, but I can never repay...
-
- CLAY
- Should I take it back?!
-
- JODY
- No, no...It's great.
-
- Beat.
-
- CLAY
- Anything on Chubb?
-
- JODY
- Yee-uk! I've read so much B.S. e-mail-
- business-analysis-proposal-reports I
- could run the company.
- (beat)
- Let's see a movie!
-
- CLAY
- I could get a video.
-
- JODY
- No...Let's go OUT!
-
- CLAY
- I don't know if we should...go out.
-
- JODY
- What does THAT mean?!
-
- CLAY
- I'm just worried.
-
- JODY
- About what?!
-
- CLAY
- (indicating her computer)
- This!
-
- JODY
- Clay, we're just playing! A little
- phreaking, a little unauthorized access-
- -the spooks have nothing on us.
-
- Beat. Clay knows otherwise.
-
- Is there something you're not telling
- me?
-
- CLAY
- No, no. I'm sorry.
- (they hug)
- I'm just really wired.
-
- JODY
- Why don't you go get a video.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- EXT. JODY'S APARTMENT COMPLEX - STREET - NIGHT
-
- Clay leaves the apartment building and turns onto the curb
- where his white Prelude is parked.
-
- Standing by the door of his car, he looks down the dimly lit
- street. A lone car is parked at the end of the block.
- Silhouetted by a distant streetlight, a FIGURE in the
- driver's seat watches him.
-
- Clay opens his car door, steps inside, and drives off.
-
- INT. CLAY'S WHITE PRELUDE - STREET - NIGHT
-
- Clay pulls to the side of the road a couple blocks away.
-
- CLAY
- (into cellular phone)
- Jody! Look outside! I think someone's
- watching your place.
-
- INT. JODY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
-
- JODY
- (into phone)
- You are so paranoid.
-
- Jody carries the phone to the window and looks out.
-
- INSERT - EXT. STREET - NIGHT
-
- The car is empty.
-
- JODY
-
- holds the drape open.
-
- JODY
- I see a car, but no one's inside.
-
- THUNDEROUS KNOCKING shakes the door.
-
- (startled)
- Shit! It's them. Gotta go.
-
- She slams down the phone and pulls a key chain out of her
- pocket. She presses a car alarm transmitter on the ring.
- CHIRP, CHIRP!
-
- HER COMPUTER SCREEN reports that it is "ENCRYPTING FILES."
- Filenames scroll up the screen as the data is locked.
-
- JODY collects herself and pulls the door open to reveal...
-
- DIANE standing alone in the entry way--obviously not the
- FBI.
-
- JODY
- Who are you?!
- (checks behind Diane)
-
- DIANE
- I work with Clay.
-
- JODY
- Yeah?
-
- Jody goes to the window and looks out.
-
- Is that your car?
-
- DIANE
- Yes.
-
- Jody comes away from the window, satisfied that all is safe.
-
- Can I come in?
-
- JODY
- Sure, sure. Why not. Who are you
- again?
-
- Diane cautiously steps through the doorway. Restrained and
- poised, she looks over Jody and her apartment.
-
- DIANE
- Diane Griffin. I'm a friend of Clay's.
-
- JODY
- He's never mentioned you.
-
- DIANE
- Hmm...I've only known him a year.
-
- JODY
- Really.
-
- Diane tours the apartment, inspected all the lavish
- possessions: the computer equipment, flowers, appliances.
-
- DIANE
- (matter-of-fact)
- We've been going out for most of it.
-
- JODY
- Really.
-
- Diane handles an espresso maker.
-
- DIANE
- Don't you have everything.
-
- Jody, still reeling, nods slightly
-
- JODY
- (quiet)
- They're gifts...from Clay.
-
- DIANE
- Ah, yes. He was always generous with
- me. Of course, back then,
- (at Jody)
- a couple weeks ago,
- (back to pacing)
- he wasn't making the kind of money he
- makes now, selling information and all.
- (off Jody's look, casual)
- Don't play innocent.
- (circling Jody)
- I know all about your little scam with
- Jack.
-
- The phone RINGS. Jody is too stunned to hear. Another
- RING.
-
- (off her look)
- Jesus! You didn't know?!
-
- After another RING, Diane picks it up.
-
- DIANE
- (into phone)
- Hello.
-
- INT. CLAY'S CAR - STREET - NIGHT
-
- Clay recognizes the voice.
-
- CLAY
- Oh shit.
-
- INT. JODY'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
-
- Diane hands Jody the phone.
-
- DIANE
- (emotionless)
- It's Clay.
-
- Diane holds the receiver and extends the handset to Jody who
- slowly turns, takes the handset, and raises it to her ear.
-
- JODY
- (into phone)
- Son-of-a-bitch!
-
- On the final word, she smashes the receiver onto the phone
- in Diane's hand, sending it to the floor.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. PARKILL LOBBY - MORNING
-
- Ragged from a bad night, Clay trudges up to the security
- gate and swipes his tag through the reader. Nothing.
-
- CLAY
- (to no one in particular)
- Come on!
-
- The Security Guard buzzes him in.
-
- INT. OFFICE CORRIDOR - MORNING
-
- Clay hurries down the corridor. In his wake, CO-WORKERS pop
- out to watch him. Clay looks up to see the scrolling ticker-
- tape on the wall. In the midst of stock quotes is a
- message: "THE MAN IS CLAY, PUTTY IN MY FINGERS." Clay
- swerves to the side and pulls its plug. The board dies but
- snickers linger.
-
- CUT TO:
-
- INT. CLAY'S OFFICE - DAY
-
- Clay sulks at his desk, surrounded by piles of express mail
- packages: fruit cake, skis, a pogo stick, etc.
-
- Diane walks in, admires the collection of gifts, then drops
- a pile of faxes on his desk.
-
- DIANE
- (unenthusiastic)
- Morning.
-
- THE FAXES
-
- show a mug shot of Clay and proclaim: "WANTED."
-
- CLAY studies the fax with concern.
-
- CLAY
- At least there's no mention of hacking.
- (turns to Diane; grave)
- Jack can't know about any of this.
-
- Diane agrees but does not offer to help.
-
- Clay picks up a line on his speaker phone. After a brief
- DIALTONE, it connects to:
-
- VOICE (V.O.)
- Third precinct.
-
- Clay hangs up.
-
- CLAY
- (distraught)
- I can't escape! All my phones forward
- to the police.
- (looks around; gestures to stacks
- of packages)
- And now this!
-
- A FEDEX MAN, burdened with ten packages, enters on cue.
-
- FEDEX MAN
- What's the holiday?
-
- Clay signs for the packages.
-
- CLAY
- Schmuck-day.
-
- Diane opens one of the packages; a decoy duck falls to the
- desktop. Clay opens another: a lethal motorized dildo.
-
- DIANE
- Has she canceled your credit cards?
-
- CLAY
- No, but I may. I can't afford this
- shit.
-
- Just then, a CLOWN shows up wearing a red-ball nose.
-
- CLOWN
- (to Clay, excited)
- Is it YOUR birthday?
-
- Clay slams the door in his face--HONK!
-
- CLAY
- Any advice?
-
- DIANE
- Don't date a hacker.
-
- As Diane turns to go, Clay spots the dildo and holds it out.
-
- DIANE
- You want to give it to me?
-
- CLAY
- (acting innocent and funny)
- I always have.
-
- Diane scoffs at his attempt at humor or apology, whatever
- that was.
-
- DIANE
- Nah. I already got screwed. Now it's
- your turn.
-
- CUT TO:
-
-
- EXT. STREET NEXT TO CAMPUS - DAY
-
- Jody peddles down the sidewalk on her bike. Forty feet
- behind, a white sedan follows her.
-
- EXT. STREET NEXT TO JODY'S APARTMENT - DAY
-
- Jody rides onto the sidewalk, abruptly hops off her bike,
- and walks up to the car that's been following her.
-
- JODY
- (approaching car)
- Don't fuck with me, Clay!
-
- But its not Clay; the two figures in the front seat turn
- away. The car races off. Was that Agent Ellis?
-
-
- INT. JODY'S APARTMENT - DAY
-
- Jody listens to the answering machine as she hurriedly
- gathers computer equipment into a pile next to the Ms.
- Pacman arcade game--its back panel is open.
-
- CLAY (V.O.)
- Jody, it's me, calling from a pay phone,
- the only place I can.
-
- Jody stows the stuff in the belly of the arcade machine: the
- laptop computer, the cellular phone, batteries, disks, etc.
-
- I know you're pissed, but you've got to
- stop these games--you're only bringing
- attention to us.
-
- Jody closes the rear panel of the machine and presses one of
- the buttons on its face. CLICK--the booty is locked away.
-
- They're watching, just waiting for us to
- slip up.
-
- Jody walks to the window and peers out.
-
- I don't see why we can't talk about this
- like adults.
-
- OUTSIDE, a HAPPY COUPLE pushes a baby stroller as they walk
- along the sidewalk outside her apartment building. He
- laughs at one of her jokes; they are a picture-perfect
- couple.
-
- We had a good thing going. Don't think
- it was all lies.
-
- Watching the happy couple calms Jody.
-
- I know, everything I say must sound like
- bullshit.
-
- Jody watches with astonishment and surprise as...
-
- THE HAPPY COUPLE (really Agent Cho and Agent Rollins)
- suddenly break formation and rush the apartment building--
- tipping over and abandoning the baby stroller.
-
- But, I really do love you.
-
- JODY races around, looking for something. It's not in her
- pockets.
-
- I just lost control.
-
- It's not on the table or on the floor.
-
- Agents Cho and Rollins bust through the front door as Jody
- pulls her key ring (with car alarm remote) from a crack in
- the sofa.
-
- Whatever. We should talk.
-
- Jody presses a button on the remote. CHIRP, CHIRP!
-
- HER COMPUTER SCREEN flashes the message: "ENCRYPTING..."
- The hard drive WHIRLS through its busy work.
-
- AGENT ELLIS walks through the doorway.
-
- ELLIS
- Hunter! Finally!
- (commanding the agents)
- Pull the plug.
-
- Cho and Rollins race to the computer, slide under the table,
- and pull a power strip out of the wall--but the computer
- stays on.
-
- THE COMPUTER SCREEN counts off as it encrypts: 60%
- COMPLETE...65%...70%...
-
- The agents pull out the desk and reach around the back,
- pulling out all the plugs.
-
- Just as the computer reports the encrypting is "DONE," the
- screen dies--its image collapses into a dot and fades away.
